Derrick Craig: A Memphis-Born Visionary Driven by Faith, Family & Community.

Early Life and Family

I was Born and raised in Memphis TN, to a single parent mother Johnnie Mae Craig. My childhood I grew up in South Memphis riverside area of Memphis TN and also part of Whitehaven near the old Crystal Palace Skating ring. Surrounded by a family that valued education, hard work, and faith in God, I learned early on that life is as much about growth as it is about giving back.

Education and Formation

Education was more than a pursuit; it was a passion. My journey through school started at Riverview Elementary grades 1st -5th .  I attended Riverview Middle School for my 6th grade year, then my mom transferred me to Bellevue Jr High out of my hood because she said it was a better school and had an optional program. I played football and ran track at Bellevue Jr High 7th- 9th grade. My high school education was at Central High 10th -12th I continued to run and track and I started running cross country this is when I earned a scholarship to attend LeMoyne -Owen College in South Memphis Soulsville as a student athlete running cross country and track. I graduated from LeMoyne-Owen College in May 2002 with a bachelor’s in business administration with a concentration in finance. While Attending LOC which offered not just academic knowledge but also the chance to engage with diverse cultures, ideas, and people who broadened my horizons.

Professional Endeavors

My career path has been a testament to my Mom and her instilling in me the belief in hard work and giving back. I started working for Wells Fargo Financial as a credit manager shortly after graduating and finally got the job after 4 interviews. I moved up the ladder really fast because of my hard work ethic and competitive nature to be the best at whatever I put my mind to doing I was promoted to assistant manager in 4 months and Branch manager within 9 months and Wells Fargo relocated me to Nashville TN 2003-2006. I was transferred back to Memphis and promoted to District Manager for Wells Fargo Financial. This is when I really started investing in Real Estate buying properties in Memphis TN that were eye sores and pretty much in unlivable conditions I would find the ugly house in the neighborhood and make it a nice affordable home to rent and or purchase for families that could not afford to purchase or rent in nicer neighborhoods. My focus was why not rehab homes for people in areas where I grew up and allow them to live and raise their family just as my mom did for me and my sidter.   Starting in the financial field ignited my passion for real estate, I quickly found ways to innovate, lead, and contribute meaningfully. Over the years, I’ve embraced opportunities that challenged me and refined my skills—whether through collaboration, mentorship, or independent projects. From unexpected successes to lessons learned through setbacks, each professional chapter has added depth to my journey as a real estate investor.

Passions and Interests

Beyond my professional life, my passion is helping as many people as I possibly can become successful regardless of what they look like (black, white, green, yellow ) LOL and where they are from (rich, poor, middle class lower class, wealthy) . I find joy in pursuits that connect me to my city MEMPHIS TN and its people. Some of my hobbies are hanging out with friends watching any and all sports, playing golf, community projects, and running/working out listening to music.

Personal Growth and Values

Throughout my life, personal growth has been a constant. I believe in the power of self-reflection and the value of setting meaningful goals. Integrity, empathy, and perseverance are values that guide me, not just in my decisions but in the way I interact with others. These principles are the compass by which I navigate life’s uncertainties and celebrate its joys.

Community and Contributions

I grew up in church every Sunday Oak Grove MB church in South Memphis Rev. James E Kendrick Pastor, being part of a community has always been integral to my identity and church was first and foremost. Whether through volunteering Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc or supporting causes I deeply care about providing affordable housing and employment opportunities, I believe that our greatest impact often comes from lifting others. Sharing knowledge, offering a helping hand, or even just being a positive presence—these are contributions I strive to make daily. This is how my mom raised me.

Legacy and Aspirations

Looking ahead, I am driven by dedication and desire to leave the world and Memphis TN a little better than I found it. Whether through career achievements, creative pursuits, or meaningful relationships, I hope to inspire others to dream big and act boldly. My legacy will be marked by the connections I foster and the ways I choose to make a difference, that’s why I feel strongly with all my heart that Johnnie Mae’s Soul Café is something that is needed in South Memphis Soulsville area.  If not then Who, If not now then When. I have put my money where my mouth is and I believe in Memphis and Making Memphis and especially South Memphis TN/Soulsville a better place to live especially if I can do it in my momma’s name and legacy in honor of Johnnie Mae Craig.
